The Bakers Who Get Picked First… and Why

Blog Post 13: The Bakers Who Get Picked First… and Why

April 12, 20266 min read

There is a question that sits quietly in the background for so many bakers, whether they are just starting out or have been going for a while. Why do some bakers seem to get chosen again and again, while others feel like they are being overlooked, even when their work is just as good?

It is easy to assume that the answer comes down to skill. That the bakers who get picked first must simply be better, more experienced, or more talented. But when you really look at it, that is rarely the full picture. In fact, many customers are not comparing technical ability in the way bakers think they are. They are not analysing crumb structure or finishing techniques. They are making a decision based on something much simpler.

They are choosing the baker who feels like the safest, easiest and most trustworthy option.

One of the biggest factors behind this is familiarity. People naturally lean towards what they recognise, and there is actually research behind this. We are far more likely to trust something we have seen a few times before than something completely new. If a customer has come across your cakes multiple times on their feed, noticed your name in local groups, or seen others interact with your posts, you start to feel known to them. You stop being a complete unknown, and that matters more than most bakers realise.

When someone is ordering for a birthday, a celebration or an event, they are not looking to take a risk. They are looking for reassurance. Familiarity helps to create that reassurance before a conversation has even started.

This is why visibility plays such a huge role in who gets picked first. It is not about being everywhere or constantly creating something new. It is about showing up often enough that people remember you. Many bakers hold back because they worry about repeating themselves or posting too much, but from a customer’s point of view, repetition is not a problem. It is often the reason they remember you when they need you.

We are all spending more time online than ever, and most buying decisions now start with what someone can quickly see, recognise and trust. If you are only showing up occasionally, even if your work is incredible, you are making it harder for people to choose you simply because they do not see you enough to build that sense of familiarity. The bakers who are consistently visible are giving themselves more opportunities to be recognised, and that recognition often translates into orders.

Trust is the next piece of the puzzle, and this is where the difference becomes even clearer. When a customer lands on your page, they are quickly forming an impression of whether you feel like someone they can rely on. This is not always a conscious thought, but it influences their decision all the same. They are looking for signs that you are active, that you have done this before, and that other people have had a good experience with you.

This is where reviews, testimonials and customer feedback become so powerful. Most customers now check reviews before choosing a business, especially when it comes to something as important as a celebration cake. Reviews act as proof that you are not just saying you are good at what you do, but that others have trusted you and been happy with the result. A baker with visible, genuine feedback is often easier to choose than one without, even if the quality of work is similar.

It is also worth recognising that trust is built through clarity. If a potential customer has to dig around to figure out what you offer, how to order, or whether you are even taking bookings, that creates hesitation. People tend to move towards the option that feels straightforward and easy. The bakers who get picked first are often the ones who make things simple. Their pages are clear, their communication is direct, and their process feels easy to follow.

This does not mean you need a perfect website or a complex system. It means thinking about your business from a customer’s point of view. If someone lands on your page for the first time, can they quickly understand what you do, what you sell, and how to take the next step. If the answer is yes, you are already making it easier for yourself to be chosen.

Another important factor is how much your business feels like a “real” business. This might sound obvious, but it is something many bakers overlook. Customers are placing orders for important moments. Birthdays, weddings, celebrations. They want to feel confident that the person they choose will deliver. Small details can make a big difference here. Consistent posting, clear information, confident communication and visible experience all contribute to that feeling of professionalism.

There is also a practical side to this that feeds into customer confidence. When you are running a baking business from home, you are still operating as a food business, and that carries responsibility. Having your processes in place, understanding food hygiene, and feeling confident in how you run things behind the scenes all comes across in how you show up. Customers might not see everything you do, but they can feel when a business is organised, prepared and trustworthy.

We see this play out all the time inside our baking community. Two bakers can be producing equally good work, but one is consistently visible, shares their customer feedback, communicates clearly and shows up with confidence, while the other posts occasionally, keeps things vague and second guesses themselves. It is not surprising which one gets picked first.

What is interesting is that the baker who gets chosen is not always doing anything drastically different. They are often doing the basics well, and doing them consistently. They are showing up, sharing their work, collecting feedback, and making it easy for people to say yes. From the outside, it can look like they have something others do not, but in reality, they are building familiarity and trust over time.

It is also important to remember that what looks like quick growth is often built on steady effort behind the scenes. A baker who seems to be getting lots of orders may have been quietly showing up, learning and refining their approach for months before it became visible. By the time others notice, the foundation has already been laid.

If you feel like you are not being picked as often as you would like, it is worth looking at your business through this lens. Not from a place of criticism, but from a place of understanding. Are you showing up often enough to be remembered. Are you making it easy for people to trust you. Are you giving customers clear reasons to choose you over someone else.

Being chosen is not about being perfect. It is about being visible, being clear, and building trust over time. When those things come together, you naturally become the baker people think of first.
